Hello! Welcome to Substack! It feels a bit like I’m surrounded by half-unpacked boxes looking for the teabags, but think I’ve managed to iron out most of the kinks and I hope you like FWJ’s new home. The shift has brought with it plenty of admin as well as excitement – if you think you should have received the early edition of the email and didn’t, just hit reply and we’ll get it sorted.
There will always be a free edition of this newsletter, but paying members make it possible. For just £5 a month you’ll get the weekly newsletter 24 hours in advance, access to the archive, and first dibs on event tickets. Starting in 2024, you’ll also get a brand new monthly email sharing details of prizes, bursaries, opportunities and awards with upcoming deadlines so you don’t miss a thing.

Saddle in for some great opportunities with New Writing North. First up is Inkubator, a development programme for writers and freelancers who want to improve their facilitation and participatory arts practice skills working with children, young people and adults. There’s a £500 bursary for anyone taking part.
Next up is the Young Creative Associates programme which is uniquely for early career freelance writers and creatives living in Newcastle, North Tyneside and Northumberland. There’s another £500 bursary on offer here, as well as bespoke funding for individuals taking part.
And there’s also First Edition, a five-day publishing industry placement scheme for 18-25 year olds from Newcastle, North Tyneside and Northumberland. Many of the placements are remote, and just one day a week or with flexible hours. And yep, this one comes with a bursary, too. Hats off to New Writing North, all of these opportunities are fantastic.
Last one for the week before I go and pack another bag – this time for a few Christmassy days in the countryside: Literature Works’ talent development programme Word Space is open for applications.
